Gujarat Diaries: Thol Lake

Away from the maddening crowd, Thor Lake is about 40kms from the Ahmadabad city and which is spread over an area of about 7 sq. km. Thor lake is an artificial lake near thol village in Kalol in Mehasana district which was constructed as an irrigation tank in 1912. It is surrounded by marshes having shallow waters. It was declared Bird Sanctuary in 1988 as it is habitat to 150 species of birds of which 60% are waterbirds. A number of migratory birds nest and breed in the lake and its periphery of which the Flamingos and Sarus crane are most prominent.

As it is a house to such a variety of birds, it is a nature lover's delight to be in this place. Along with the birds it has a beautiful scenic view which would be an excellent spot for photographers. We are able to spot flamingos, painter storks, white pelicans, egrets, spoonbill and many kinds of ducks. As the lake has shallow waters it gives us an opportunity to observe the birds more closely.

The best time to visit the lake early mornings from November to February and witness the daybreak at the banks. post rains from the beginning of Nivember to February a drive down to the lake is an outstanding way to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city life and taking in a few deep breath from the serenity of nature.the place is worth spending an entire day capturing the different movements and behavior of the birds in alliance with natureThe entrance fees is Rs. 20 from Monday to Saturday and Rs. 25 on Sunday.

Some of the beautiful pictures which got captured in our cameras during our visit to the beautiful place and don't miss a chance to visit it.
